Well Being Retreat Center Facilities

Well Being Foundation is a 501(c)3 a non-profit, non-denominational, unaffiliated organization located on 160 acres of scenic rural land in Tazewell, Tennessee bordered by 2 1/2 miles of the environmentally significant Powell River.

The Retreat Center began in 2009 when Don Oakley and Patty Bottari (husband and wife) moved onto the raw land. The retreat facilities have all been constructed since. We hold our own monthly retreats and host a variety of other weekend or longer retreats throughout the year. The cabins are comfortable and the retreat meals are tasty and nutritious. Nature and silence abound.

Our Main Conference Building has a Meeting Room which can seat up to 50 people, a Commercial Kitchen and Dining Room which can seat up to 38 people indoors and there is an expansive outdoor deck overlooking the Powell River Valley that has additional seating. The building is climate controlled with AC and has excellent new fiber optic wifi, full service bathrooms and vaulted ceilings.

Our 1,800 square foot open air Powell River Pavilion on the banks of the scenic Powell River is an alternative fresh-air meeting facility. A second Commercial Kitchen and Men's and Women's bathrooms are adjacent.

Well Being Retreat Center has 14 cabins and six Cabinettes that can sleep up to a total of 38 people

Main Conference Building

The Main Conference Building has a 1,000 square foot vaulted Meeting Room which is  air-conditioned space with views across the Powell River valley. There are plenty of comfortable padded chairs, Yoga mats, pillows, blankets, cushions and backjacks. The Meeting Room has wifi, a flat screen wall-mounted TV, voice amplification recording system, and beautiful Persian carpets.

Powell River Pavilion

The Powell River Pavilion is Well Being's open air event venue. It is located directly on the banks of the Powell River and includes covered picnic table seating for 50 people overlooking the river, a stage, and a commercial kitchen for onsite meal prep. This venue is ideally suitable for open-air retreat sessions Yoga, and dining under the high canopy. It has 1,800 square feet under cover, electricity and four overhead fans. Bathrooms and a small commercial kitchen are directly adjacent.

Meals

Full Service, freshly prepared meals are served for Retreat attendees. We serve vegetarian meals, or non-vegetarian meals with a vegetarian option. Nearly all of our recipes are gluten-free and mostly organic, often from our garden in the warmer months. We provide assorted herbal and black teas, coffee, fruits, mixed nuts and homemade sweet loafs (such as almond banana loaf) during retreats. Click here for a more detailed information on Retreat Meals. (Note that meal service is not available if you are renting a cabin for your own personal retreat or sabbatical.)

They all have tiled floors, vaulted pine ceilings, kitchenettes with fridge, unlimited (on demand) hot water, and very comfortable beds.  Four cabins are earth-sheltered with sod roofs which keep the cabins warm in the winter and cool in the summer. (Deer will sometimes graze on the rooftops.) In cooler months the tile floors are heated.

Wood Duck Cabin

Cabinettes

Our Cabinettes are the most affordable indoor lodging option for retreats. They are located under a mature tree canopy within 60 yards of the Main Conference Building. Each of the six Cabinettes has two extra long twin beds, a mini-fridge, a ceiling fan and plenty of ventilation. These buildings are well-insulated and stay warm in the winter (with small electric heaters) and relatively cool in the summer due to the huge tree canopy overhead. Bathrooms are in the Retreat Center Building just very short (lighted) walk away where there are large men's and women's bathrooms, both with showers and unlimited (on demand) hot water. Note that Cabinettes are available only for lodging for retreat functions and not available for Personal Retreats (because they don't have kitchenettes).

Campground

We are a licensed campground and this is the most economical lodging option. We maintain about 1/4 mile of mowed (almost) level pasture directly on the banks of the scenic Powell River. There is potable water and electric connections at the concrete steps to the river (affectionately named "The Palace Steps"). There are also climate controlled, separate men's and women's bathrooms at the Powell River Pavilion - a short walk away (depending on where you set up your tent) . The AT Shelters are also available for tent-free camping at the same price as the tenting option.
