Exploring Medicinal Plants

with Steve Roark

Enjoy a Saturday workshop with Steve Roark on the 160 diverse acres land of Well Being Retreat Center focused on the field identification of native plants and the habitats where they can be found. Herbaceous plants as well as trees and shrubs will be covered.  There will be a field trip, plant identification, discussion of medicinal uses and methods of extraction of local plants and their healing phytochemicals.

Steve Roark is a retired forester with 36 years of experience in both Kentucky and Tennessee. His knowledge of forest ecosystems and personal passion for botany has provided him with sound plant identification skills that he enjoys sharing with others.  Steve continues to use his natural history knowledge as a volunteer naturalist at Cumberland Gap National Historical Park and writes a nature column for several local newspapers.


Check-in will be between 8:45 to 9:00 am on Saturday July 25th. A snack and coffee, teas and refreshing lemon ginger water will be served on arrival. Group sessions will be held outdoors and at the open-air Powell River Pavilion on the bank of the Powell River. Full  service, freshly prepared lunch will be provided The program will end at 5:00 pm on Saturday afternoon.

Please bring comfortable walking shoes, hat for shade, and sunscreen.

The program will include a brief history of medicinal plant use in the Appalachians and a discussion of Appalachian biodiversity. There will be am extended field trip Saturday morning to identify medicinal plants and other plants of interest. After lunch on Saturday, will be an opportunity to explore Well Being Retreat Center on your own. Later in the afternoon Steve will talk about when to collect plant material and the parts of different plant that contain the medicinally active compounds (phytochemicals). Also, methods of extraction will be presented

Lunch will be a fresh full service meal prepared in our commercially licensed kitchen at the Powell River Pavilion. Lunch will be served outdoors in the open air Powell River Pavilion with oversized pincic tables to allow social distancing.
