Well Being Retreat Center - Event

Exploring Medicinal Plants

with Steve Roark

July 24 - 26, 2020

Enjoy a weekend with Steve Roark on the 160 diverse acres land of Well Being Retreat Center focused on the field identification of native plants and the habitats where they can be found. Herbaceous plants as well as trees and shrubs will be covered.  There will be two field trips as well as some evening discussions and displays. Other evening session topics include how to harvest medicinal plants and methods of extracting healing phytochemicals.

Steve Roark is a retired forester with 36 years of experience in both Kentucky and Tennessee. His knowledge of forest ecosystems and personal passion for botany has provided him with sound plant identification skills that he enjoys sharing with others.  Steve continues to use his natural history knowledge as a volunteer naturalist at Cumberland Gap National Historical Park and writes a nature column for several local newspapers.

Check-in will be between 3-5 pm Friday afternoon. Full  service, freshly prepared meals will be served beginning with Friday supper (6:00 pm) through Sunday lunch. Coffee, teas and snacks will be available throughout the weekend.

Friday Night will feature a history of medicinal plant use in the Appalachians and a discussion of Appalachian biodiversity. There will be a field trip Saturday morning to identify medicinal plants and other plants of interest.

After lunch on Saturday, will be an opportunity to explore Well Being Retreat Center on your own or paddle on the Powell. Later in the afternoon will be devoted to collecting medicinal plants and will include a discussion of harvesting ethics and preservation.

On Saturday after a wholesome and delicious supper, Steve will talk about when to collect plant material and the parts of different plant that contain the medicinally active compounds (phytochemicals).
